In Dudapura village, most men earn their livelihood through mining, while women support their families through agriculture and animal husbandry. Under the Saksham project, Dang Vikas Sansthan (DVS) identified and supported 280 of the poorest families in the area, using well-defined socio-economic indicators. Among these beneficiaries was Shimbhu Lal, a long-time mine worker.

For the past five years, Shimbhu Lal had been experiencing health issues. However, due to a lack of awareness, he had never undergone testing for silicosis, a common occupational disease among mine workers. During an entitlement tracking initiative conducted by DVS volunteers, they identified Shimbhu Lal as a potential silicosis case. The team counseled him, informed him about the disease, and encouraged him to attend a free awareness and detection camp organized by the organization.

Shimbhu Lal attended the camp as advised. However, his application for the silicosis test could not proceed because his Jan Aadhaar card was not linked to his bank account. Recognizing this barrier, the organization stepped in to assist. Through persistent follow-up with the Village Development Officer and Panchayat Samiti in Karauli, his Jan Aadhaar card was successfully rectified on January 17, 2023.

The very next day, on January 18, Shimbhu Lal reapplied for the silicosis test. His first test was conducted on February 2, and after completing the required medical procedures, a silicosis certificate was issued on February 22 by the medical department.

As a result, Shimbhu Lal became eligible for financial assistance and entitlements under the silicosis relief scheme. With the monetary support received, he is now able to access regular treatment. More importantly, his family’s financial situation has improved, providing them with a renewed sense of security.

“Due to the monetary benefits that I received from the silicosis scheme, I am able to get the regular treatment done on time, and the financial condition of my family is also improving,” says Shimbhu Lal, expressing heartfelt gratitude to Dang Vikas Sansthan for their continuous support and handholding throughout the process.
